Sheffield Steelers were back in Challenge Cup action against local rivals the Nottingham Panthers tonight. The Steelers haven’t dropped a point in Challenge Cup action and looked to continue that run.

Teams news was that Barry Brust found himself back between the pipes, backed up by Rok Stojanovic who was using up the spare import slot as DeLuca sat out his 2nd game of suspension.

With DeLuca sitting out, Cole Shudra’s versatility was also drafted back into the squad.

The Steelers starting 6 announced as:

#33 Barry Brust

#47 Adrian Saxrud Danielsen

#5 Daine Todd

#10 Tanner Eberle

#12 Justin Hodgman

#90 John Armstrong

The game couldn’t have gotten off to a much worse start for the men in Orange when the Panthers found themselves on the scoreboard with only 1.04 on the clock. Latal with the giveaway in the defensive zone and Domingue found Welsh who found Boivin who made no mistake! 1-0 Panthers.

After the Steelers killed off an Ellerby tripping penalty, the Panthers doubled their lead at 4.51 through Betteridge who tipped in a Doherty shot from the blue line. Ex-steeler Mark Matheson also picking up an assist on the play.

The Steelers needed to get on the scoresheet and up stepped Tanner Eberle after returning to the squad. After a scramble in front of Carr, the puck found itself back with Eberle and his wrist shot beat Carr up high.

We headed into the 1st intermission break trailing by 2 goals to 1.

The Steelers tied the game up with a Robert Dowd powerplay goal at 28.03 as Steven Lee sat in the box for rouging. It was originally the good work from Connolly to keep the puck on the half boards with Vallerand then finding Kevin Schulze on the blueline who slid the puck over to Dowd for a slapslot which beat Carr! All square at 2-2.

The Steelers took the lead shortly afterwards at 30.33 when Vallerand find himself on the doorstep to slot the puck home after Carr couldn’t handle a Connolly blast. Robert Dowd also picking up an assist.

The Panthers managed to go into the 2nd intermission all square with a goal at 36.17. Kevin Domingue the original chance at the top of Barry Brust’s crease which Todd was unable to clear and Boivin tied the game with a backhanded shot just inside the post.  Assists to Domingue and Welsh.

No goals in the 3rd period meant we headed into a maximum of 5 minutes sudden death overtime.

Tanner Eberle only required 2 minutes and 55 seconds to hustle is way back onto the puck at the Panthers blue line which allowed him a chance one on one with Carr and he made no mistake as he whistled a shot high into the top corner to take the 2 points!

The match was followed by an impressive Squid Game Eddy after Eberle rightly picked up the Man of The Match award. Kevin Carr picking up the same award for the Panthers with an excellent performance in goal.
