It was a full-circle moment for pop-rock icons McFly last night as they returned to Utilita Arena Sheffield for their 10th performance at the venue, celebrating the milestone in the very place where their story first began.
In front of more than 10,000 fans, the band were surprised backstage with a special presentation by Dom Stokes, General Manager of Utilita Arena Sheffield. McFly were presented with the award for their “10th Performance at Utilita Arena Sheffield”, marking their remarkable journey with the venue.
The night also featured a heartfelt tribute to Block 108, Row F — the exact seats where lead singer Tom Fletcher first dreamt up the band’s name during a Busted soundcheck over two decades ago.
Earlier this year, Tom recalled the story that has since delighted fans around the world:
“This is a very special arena in McFly history. I was sitting right here on the Smash Hits Tour in the early 2000s watching Busted soundcheck Year 3000 when the name McFly was presented to me by the universe. I ran back to tell James, ‘I’ve got the band name!’ and he was like, ‘Yes you have!’ Then I called Danny and he was like… ‘What’s a McFly?’
This is where the name McFly was born… here is Row F, for Fly.”
To honour that story, a commemorative blue star design was created and placed on Block 108, Row F seats, designed and produced by Sheffield-based company Dysons.
Dom Stokes, General Manager at Utilita Arena Sheffield, said:
“It was incredible to welcome McFly back to Sheffield for their tenth performance here and to celebrate their connection to this venue. When we heard the story about how the band got their name right here in our seats, we knew we had to do something. It’s a lovely nod to their history and a reminder of how important Sheffield is in McFly’s journey.”
The Arena Star Award is given to artists that perform 10 shows at the venue in recognition of this outstanding achievement – this new award was launched in November 2025 with McFly the very first recipients.
