Sheffield Steelers 5 - 3 Manchester Storm

Sheffield Steelers Post Game Podcast

It was a return Challenge Cup fixture against the Manchester Storm tonight as Steelers looked to back up the victory in Altringham.

Team news wasn’t great as it was confirmed 4 players were missing in Daine Todd, Brendan Connolly, Keaton Ellerby and John Armstrong.

Rok Stojanovic was given the netminding duties and was backed up by Ben Churchfield.

The first period got off to the best start possible as Martin Latal picked up the Steelers first goal of the night with only 41 seconds on the clock. Mosey sent the puck in from the blue line and it was redirected home by Latal with a second assist to Justin Hodgman.

The Storm levelled the game up at 10.11 through Curtis Hamilton after Stojanovic dealt with the first shot from Zack Sullivan, but lost control of the rebound which popped straight out to Hamilton and he made no mistake.

Steelers headed into the second period all level at 1-1.

47 seconds to score in the first period, and only 49 seconds to score in the second period as Matias Sointu picked up his first goal of his hat-trick night. Justin Hodgman with the good work to provide the pass for the tap in at the back door with Davey Phillips picking up a second assist.

The Steelers went on to double their lead at 26.06 through Anthony DeLuca on a delayed penalty play when the initial shot was saved but DeLuca picked up the rebound and slotted it home. 3-1 to the Steelers.

The Storm however wouldn’t go away and brought the lead back within one at 39.10 as Scott Simmonss redirected a shot from Cameron Critchlow. Second assist to Marc McNulty.

All to play for as Steelers headed into the third period 3-2 up.

With a depleted bench, game management was key for the Steelers and they did just that, neutralising the final period for the first 10 minutes before they went back two goals ahead at 50.59. Sointu picking up his second goal. Vallerand this time with the good work down the right wing and Matias was once again in the right place at the back door to slot it home. 4-2.

The game was then put to bed at 58.48 a Sointu picked up his first hat trick for the Steelers with an unassisted Empty Net Goal as the Storm pulled Ginn to no avail.

There was only one winner for the Man of the match award and that was Matias Sointu who also took on his first Eddy for the club!

Two good nights work for the Steelers as they pick up two wins against the Storm. It’s now a case of resting up for the boys before they are back in action on Wednesday night against the Fife Flyers.

Wednesday is another one of our £5 (plus fees) games – See you there Sheffield!
