Sheffield Varsity Returns

20 March 2024

Sheffield’s two universities will be going head-to-head in over 80 events in a bid to take home the Varsity 2024 trophy.

The annual sporting competition between Sheffield Hallam University and University of Sheffield has taken place every year since 1997 (minus one year for Covid) and is considered one of the largest varsity tournaments in the UK, featuring 15,000 spectators and 65 teams.

This year’s competition will be starting strong with Ice Hockey as the first major event on Wednesday 20 March 2024, proudly hosted at Utilita Arena Shefield.

The competition is organised by elected student Sports Officers from each university. Here’s what they have to say about this year’s event:

Ellie Millar, Sports Officer, Sheffield Hallam University said:

“This is the 26th Sheffield Varsity, with new exciting events and more athletes participating, this is going to be one of the biggest and best varsities yet.

Varsity for me is the prime opportunity to show your true passion for both your sport and university. With over 2,000 talented athletes, 80 fixtures, 30 different sports and over 15,000 spectators, there’s no better time to get behind Sheffield Hallam. Come on, Hallam!”

Annie Henderson, Wellbeing and Sports Officer, University of Sheffield described the event as:

“More than just a sporting competition, it is a culmination of commitment, teamwork, talent and pride that unites the entire university. Being able to walk out wearing your Black and Gold kit is a feeling like no other. This year's Varsity is going to be bigger and better than ever, and I can’t wait to watch the events unfold; it’s going to be another exciting one!"
