Visitors travelling to Utilita Arena Sheffield over the coming months are advised to plan ahead, as National Highways will be carrying out essential maintenance work on the M1 and A631 at Junction 34 (Tinsley Viaduct) from Monday, 10 November 2025 through to summer 2026.

What’s happening?

National Highways are refurbishing bridge joints on both levels of the Tinsley Viaduct to keep the structure safe and extend its lifespan. This work will take place in phases of around six weeks each, involving small sections of the bridge being treated, cleaned, and reinstalled.

The improvements will also include the replacement of existing 50mph signs on the A631 with new roundels and road markings.

While these are routine works, they’re essential to help reduce the risk of future repairs and unplanned disruption.

When and where closures will take place?

Work will be carried out overnight between 9pm and 6am, with alternating closures on the M1 upper deck and A631 lower deck.

The following overnight closures are currently planned:

  • 10–14 November 2025: M1 northbound (upper deck)

  • 13–14 November 2025: A631 northbound (lower deck)

  • 5–6 January 2026: A631 northbound (lower deck)

  • 7–9 January 2026: M1 northbound (upper deck)

  • 18–19 February 2026: A631 northbound (lower deck)

  • 20–22 February 2026: M1 northbound (upper deck)

  • 7–8 April 2026: A631 southbound (lower deck)

  • 9–11 April 2026: M1 southbound (upper deck)

  • 25–26 May 2026: A631 southbound (lower deck)

  • 27–29 May 2026: M1 southbound (upper deck)

  • 10–11 July 2026: M1 southbound (upper deck)

Diversions

When closures are in place:

  • M1 traffic will be diverted via the A631 lower deck between Meadowhall and Tinsley Roundabouts.

  • A631 traffic will use the service road between the same points.
    These routes will be reversed for southbound closures.

Please allow extra travel time if you’re attending any of the following events at Utilita Arena Sheffield, as nearby roadworks may affect your journey home:
