Emergency Road repairs on Broughton Lane - updated 11th February 2026

Emergency Road repairs are currently underway on Broughton Lane outside the Arena - this is impacting on traffic coming to the venue from both directions.

These works will impact Netball Supercup 2026 and we recommend customers driving to the venue allow extra time for their journey as the traffic is backed up and slow moving due to these works.

M1 Tinsley Viaduct Works – Travel Update

Last updated: March 2026

Visitors travelling to Utilita Arena Sheffield are advised to plan ahead, as essential overnight maintenance work on the M1 and A631 at Junction 34 (Tinsley Viaduct) is continuing.

What’s happening?
National Highways are refurbishing bridge joints on both levels of the Tinsley Viaduct and replacing 50mph repeater signs with updated road markings on the A631. This routine work helps ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the route and reduces the need for future emergency repairs.

The programme began in November 2025 and will continue in phases until late summer 2026.

When will roads be closed?
All work takes place overnight only (9pm–6am), with closures alternating between the M1 upper deck and the A631 lower deck.

Upcoming overnight closures include:

  • 2–4 March: M1 northbound (upper deck)
  • 23 March: A631 southbound (lower deck)
  • 20–22 April: M1 southbound (upper deck)
  • 7 May: A631 southbound (lower deck)
  • 8–10 June: M1 southbound (upper deck)
  • 19 June: A631 northbound (lower deck)
  • 27–29 July: M1 southbound (upper deck)
  • 31 July: A631 northbound (lower deck)
  • 14 September: A631 northbound (lower deck)

(Each phase includes contingency nights in case of poor weather.)

Diversions

  • M1 closures: traffic will divert via the A631 lower deck
  • A631 closures: traffic will use the service road
  • Routes will operate in reverse for southbound closures

Some overnight noise may be audible. National Highways has confirmed works have been planned alongside local authorities and emergency services to minimise disruption.
